Please welcome fellow author Casie Aufenthie who wrote 'The Drift', an absolute gem of a book that I read in March 2022.
Casie: My favorite character in the book is one that has, far and away, become a reader favorite too, and this would be my sarcastic telepath, Kip Garcia Rivera. He was the first original character I ever created back when I used to dabble in fanfiction, and when I pulled him into this world and refined who he was, he became incredibly real to me. He’s the one character that remains second nature to write. Every scene he is in just flows, and I know exactly what he would say or do in any situation. I just adore how he truly is a clever clown with a heart of gold.
Casie: What I enjoy most, the reason I write, is the ability to connect to others across any distance or even time. Stories have a way of reaching others in a truly special way, and the idea I can touch someone’s heart or mind with my words is incredibly powerful. Whenever I find out I’ve been successful in that endeavor, it’s the greatest feeling in the world.
Casie: What I love about both fantasy and science fiction is the infinite possibilities they offer. These genres open up the narrative in a way others don’t always allow, so as a writer, they feel extra challenging in the best way. There are no restraints on what can happen. Anything I can imagine can be real in these worlds, and it permits characters, setting, and society to go through amazing metamorphoses while also being grounded in the common human experiences we have today.
Casie: My favorite fantasy book of all time is ‘Dragon Flight’ by Anne McCaffrey. The world building is incredible, but the characters are what pulled me in and have me revisiting the planet of Pern frequently. My dad introduced me to this book as a young teen, and it was the first time I encountered a female lead who was every bit as tough and clever as the male lead. They were true partners, and I loved that. It definitely influenced how I established Tristan and Samara in my book, The Drift.
In a future where the human race has split into three species, the mentally-evolved Illuminatos have conquered the other two in a brutal Evolutionary War. Now, the seven most powerful Illuminatos, the Council, control the Earth, ruling over the other two human species through violent oppression.
As one of the defeated physically-evolved Corporis, Samara lost everything: her family, her freedom, and her will to fight. But, when her master, Lord Wyatt Faraday, commands her to find the mysterious leader of the Resistance, Tristan, everything she thought she knew is challenged.
Tristan is an Illuminatos who has turned his back on his own kind to follow his principles. An idealist hoping to restore peace and equality for all species, he cannot escape his past, and it may force him to make a terrible choice.
Their meeting will change the world, but will it be for the better?
"Not only masterfully penned with a natural and addictive flow to the story, but also socially commentative, wildly unpredictable, and undeniably entertaining."—Self-Publishing Review

Casie grew up in a small, rural town in North Dakota where she passed the long winters devouring books of all genres and playing video games with her big brother. After a school project required creating her first story to share, she fell in love with how fiction is capable of touching the hearts and minds of others. Her passion for writing only grew stronger over the years, and she published her debut novel, The Drift, in March of 2021.
The author still lives in North Dakota with her amazingly patient husband, incredible daughter, and a very silly miniature dachshund. When not reading or writing, chances are, she's either spending time with family, baking, or boxing.
